### Performance Analysis

According to [Transformation Academy’s](https://transformationacademy.com/) Org Leadership Certification, analyzing an employee’s performance composes of 3 different steps:

1. **Employee Expectations** - this composes of 3 steps:
    1. **Expected Outcomes/Goals** - Clearly articulate to the employee what they will be required to do and how and your employee will measure progress
    2. **Areas to be Addressed** - List the specific tasks, behaviors, outcomes, job responsibilities, tools, skills, and so on that a specific role requires.
    3. **Expected Results/Performance** - Identify the expected results from the defined outcomes, establish a measurement criteria or a timeline that will help in identifying its success.
2. **Employee Needs -** Identify if the employee is capable of executing the desired outcomes/ or goals. If not, assess what they need to make it possible. Do they need training? Is the expected outcome or goal on par with their level of proficiency? Are they willing to undergo training for that outcome or goal? These are a few of the questions that you can use to evaluate.
3. **Analyzing the Performance -** Review the goals you had identified, as well as areas you previously identified as needing to be addressed, including specific tasks, behaviors, results, job responsibilities, tools, skills, etc.

### Effective Communication

I cannot elaborate further how much communication is imperative in tech teams. From delegating tasks to providing feedback, it’s vital that what you inform and say to your team is understood correctly. 

One way that you can encourage effective communication is paraphrasing. Let your team repeat what you said and vice versa. Make sure that both parties confirm they understood what has been communicated.

Another crucial component in establishing effective communication within your team is to create a conducive and safe space for them to voice out their thoughts. Take time listen to their views and opinions and build trust within the team’s relationship. If you learn to develop this, you will be in awe on how much ideas and strategies your members can come up with to help you in the development of your team.

### Feedback Loops

According to [Techtarget](https://www.techtarget.com/searchitchannel/definition/feedback-loop), a feedback loop is the part of a system in which some portion (or all) of the system's output is used as input for future operations. The loop usually consists of four (4) steps:

1. Gather feedback
2. Analyze feedback
3. Act on the feedback
4. Follow-up with the action of the feedback

A feedback loop can be negative or positive, but the steps still remain the same. We can identify if a feedback is negative when it’s addressing concerns or issues that cause inconvenience to a customer or slow down a particular process. Positive feedback however, is when we listen to a concern that amplifies growth and effectiveness of a team’s output or process.

What’s good about feedback loops is that they let you act on a specific concern without wasting too much time. A team jumps directly to the feedback, analyzes it, acts on it, and follows-up on the updates from the action.

### Hire a Coach (or be one)

In this generation, employees are looking for a leader that exhibits a coaching mindset. According to the [Future of Work Report](https://www.growmotely.com/report/) conducted by Growmotely, 54% of professionals appeal most to coaching, growth, and expansion alongside remote working for their careers. 

With the pandemic happening in the last 2 years, most professionals are no longer interested with office perks like free lunches and ping pong tables, but more on working with an organization that has a growth mindset and leaders that care for the growth of their team member’s careers. In his book "Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know," Adam Grant shared two types of conflict that usually arise: task conflict and relationship conflict. The former is healthy, and the latter is unnecessary. To maintain someone's trust, avoid arguments that focus on your personal differences because they're unproductive. Keep the arguments around the task at hand instead.

Amanda Ripley once said in her book, "High Conflict," that before saying something, ask yourself these three questions:

1. Should it be said?
2. Should it be said now?
3. Should it be said by me?

If the answers are no, it's best to keep things to yourself and talk about them constructively at another time.

## WHAT IS SELF-SABOTAGE? ##

Self-sabotage is any pattern of behavior that undermines your progress toward accomplishing something you want. It can be either an intentional and deliberate action or an unconsciously conducted behavior that hinders you from your success and thus, impacts your overall well-being. It creates a loop of problems, preventing you from successfully moving forward and facing challenges.

*Self-sabotage* can be quite destructive, damaging self-confidence, and affecting performance at work and relationships with others. Some experts even consider it a form of psychological self-harm.

Remember when your manager asked you a few times to do a presentation during your team meetings, and you said yes every time because you needed to make an impression for a possible promotion, but you always backed out at the last minute because you had not prepared your slides? That is a clear example of self-sabotage.

In short, self-sabotage means getting in your own way and holding yourself back from achieving your goals. 

### WHY DO PEOPLE SELF-SABOTAGE? ###

At its core, self-sabotage serves as a coping mechanism for a previously perceived threat that is no longer useful at present. People who self-sabotage usually think they are protecting themselves from further complications and negative feelings, but they are not aware that it only exacerbates the problem.

Here are common reasons why people engage in self-sabotage:

- Poor self-esteem, often manifested as imposter syndrome
- Fear of failure or rejection
- Fear or discomfort of change or success
- Insecure attachment style
- Need for control
- Learned behavior from childhood or culture
- Cognitive dissonance (inconsistent or conflicting thoughts)
- Ambivalence (confused or conflicting feelings)
- Social or peer pressure

### TELLTALE SIGNS OF SELF-SABOTAGE ###

While there are plenty of reasons why people self-sabotage, it may look different for every individual. It primarily depends on the person, the situation, and the context of the behavior. Some behaviors may seem quite obvious, while others are harder to spot.

Here are common signs of self-sabotage:

- Procrastination
- Avoiding responsibilities
- Avoiding people and situations that are uncomfortable
- Staying in the comfort zone and avoiding change
- Setting low and easily achieved goals
- Breaking promises or not following through on commitments
- Lack of preparation
- Creating conflict with others
- Attempting to control others
- Comparing oneself to others
- Making excuses
- Taking actions that don’t match values and goals
- Showing up late to important meetings or appointments
- Giving up when things get more difficult
- Social withdrawal or isolation
- Engaging in risky behaviors (e.g. substance use, gambling, overspending, or promiscuity)

### HOW TO STOP BEING A SELF-SABOTEUR ###
Like any behavioral pattern, self-sabotage is learned, and therefore it can be unlearned. It is not inherent; you were not born with it, but rather developed it through experience. Hence, it can be changed by consciously engaging in positive experiences.

- **Increase Your Self-Awareness and Develop Mindfulness**

The first step in stopping self-sabotaging behavior is becoming aware of the unhelpful patterns. Examining triggers, automatic responses, and associated emotions helps identify the root causes of these patterns. Regular journaling is a proven effective way to do this. Record your thoughts, emotions, and behavior on a notepad and see if you can determine where they are coming from. Also, take several mindful moments to reflect and check in with yourself throughout the day. This will help you gain more insights about yourself and become more intentional with what you need to change.

- **Plan and Make Small Changes**

Positive actions beat self-defeating actions. However, remember that changing unhelpful habits, requires small steps. Plan how you will go about incremental changes. You may start by changing one thought or behavior every day and giving yourself some time to make that change a new habit.

- **Practice Self-Compassion**

Self-compassion means being patient and kind to oneself. Understand that changing your self-sabotaging behavior is not always smooth sailing and that there is always the likelihood of having failed attempts. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small it is. Being self-compassionate will make it easy for you to move from where you are now to where you want to be.

- **Engage in Positive Self-Talk**

Most of the time, self-sabotage happens due to negative internal dialogue. To replace this negative self-talk with a positive one. Build a daily habit of telling yourself at least one self-affirming statement. Once you develop a more positive self-concept, you can easily stop engaging in self-sabotage and start working on your desired personal and professional life.

- **Reach Out for Support**
